Compassion Bears Fruit

Five-year-old Abigail was wailing at the local emergency room one night in February. While taking care of her two-week-old sister, she reached her small hands up for an object, and knocked a kerosene lamp back towards her. She had second-degree burns on her face, neck, right arm and most of her chest and abdomen. With no money in his pocket, her father rushed her to the ER and wept beside her bed with little hope that some help might come to ease Abigail's pain.

"The Lord called us to take part in this situation," said Dr. Susie Cayaon, the Luke Society's director in the Philippines. Her modern clinic in the town of Quezon often takes care of patients who can't afford medical treatment elsewhere.

The little Muslim girl battled her fever, and the Luke Society staff did what they could to help. Through their compassionate care, they were able to share the gospel with the family, and her grandfather, a Muslim, prayed to receive Christ as his savior.

Abigail was later discharged with a smile on her face.

"The opportunity opened a special relationship between us. We've found a new brother and hopefully as they continue to open their doors for us, we may harvest some more."
