Vehicle needs in Nicaragua
Dr. Marwel Garcia makes a home visit to a patient to whom he has provided medical services. The Luke Society is helping to raise funds for Garcia to purchase a new vehicle, which would make travel to these locations easier. (File photo)
The man with open wounds is passed by on the other side of the road. No one offers a helping hand or even a compassionate glance in his direction. If someone would simply take a moment to notice, they would see not only this hurting man, but a sea of struggling people.
Malnutrition, kidney failure, high blood pressure, tumors, and mental and spiritual distress—it’s all here in this small Nicaraguan village that longs for someone to care. They need someone willing to stop, to see and to refuse to walk past without noticing.
Dr. Marwel Garcia is the man who stops. He notices. He shows concern and selflessly works to improve the situation.
Marwel works part time in a government hospital, but spends afternoons serving in the nearby impoverished village of Ruben Dario. Since beginning his work among the poor, he has used his own resources to build a small clinic in the community. With an infectiously joyful personality and a ready laugh, Dr. Marwel works diligently in his clinic and visits the homes of the poor to better understand and serve.
As Marwel’s clinic grows, he finds that the aging motorbike he relies on no longer meets the needs of the people. A pickup truck would allow him to transport patients across challenging terrain and bring medication and supplies from the city to the clinic in Rubén Darío. In addition, it would make trips to the nine churches he visits each month easier, and enable him to provide better medical care in the small outlying communities.
As Marwel’s service area expands, longer trips have become increasingly dangerous. The deeply rutted paths on which he travels can turn into rushing streams. On one such trip, Dr. Marwel even injured his knee. It has become increasingly clear that a new vehicle will not only help Marwel with his ministry but also improve his overall safety and well-being.
We are asking for your help in bringing healing and the hope of Jesus to the extremely underserved in Nicaragua. Investing $35,000 in a new pickup truck will greatly enhance Marwel’s ability to reach those in need. Your contribution can make a tangible difference for the people he is dedicated to serving.
