Ecuador vehicle needs
Having reliable transportation will help Dr. Sophia and her team as they travel around to several locations where they have ministry activities, including the enrichment projects where they work with children.
QUININDE, ECUADOR—Security, provision, prestige, accomplishment, advancement — if we’re honest, these are things most of us desire and pursue. And rightly so; they can be good gifts. Yet for many in Ecuador, the daily reality looks very different: uncertainty, need, hopelessness, feeling forgotten.
Into this reality steps Dr. Sofia Cañadas, the Luke Society ministry director in Quinindé, Ecuador. Each day, she and her team reach out to children and families facing the isolating effects of poverty and pervasive gang violence.
Although the Luke Society has had a presence in Quinindé for 25 years, Dr. Sofia officially began leading the ministry as its sole medical director in January. Before answering this call, she served as a senior staff member at a private hospital in Quito, trained medical students, and earned both her family medicine specialty and a doctorate in public health. Practicing medicine in a remote, high-risk community was never part of her career plan — until God redirected her path.
When asked to step into the role of ministry director, Dr. Sofia sensed God’s unmistakable leading. Accepting meant walking into the unknown. One family member even questioned her decision, call ing it a “demotion.” And from a worldly perspective, perhaps it was. But Dr. Sofia chose obedience over comfort, trusting God’s call even when it appeared foolish to others.
Her response brings to mind James 4:10: “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up.” Today, as ministry director, she not only oversees the clinic but also three children’s centers and brings mobile medical care and preventative health training to rural communities.
To support Dr. Sofia’s expanding responsibilities, we are seeking to raise $30,000 for a ministry vehicle. Reliable transportation will allow her to travel safely and efficiently between ministry sites as well serve faithfully in rural villages along rough roads.
Thank you for being willing to say “yes” in support of Dr. Sofia’s ministry — just as she said “yes” to God’s call to leave what was easy and familiar and step courageously into the unknown. Because of her obedience, lives are being transformed in Quinindé and beyond. We in the Luke Society are honored to join in this remarkable work.
