Liberia clinic offers vast array of services

MONROVIA, LIBERIA―A large number patients stream into New Community Health Center in Monrovia, Liberia, every month. Most come for routine care — hypertension, prenatal checkups and childhood immunizations. Others arrive in a far more urgent condition: severe burns from cooking fires, victims of motorbike accidents, or children struggling to breathe.

Resources are limited and needs are great in West African medical care, yet something deeper is happening. Overworked physicians and busy nurses hold onto a quiet commitment that every patient who walks through the doors will be seen, valued and loved. This is the daily prayer of the small staff at New Community Health Center and its director, nurse Denise Maxwell.

Denise oversees the day-to-day operations of the clinic — supervising staff, caring for patients and solving problems before they become crises. Yet her leadership does not end when the clinic doors close. For the past year and half, since her husband’s untimely passing, Denise has been a single mother to five children. Two of them came into her care after her brother and his wife passed away from Ebola in 2015.

In a country where hardship has been common and healthcare can feel out of reach, New Community Health Center and Denise’s own home stand as places of hope. Places where physical treatment and spiritual encouragement walk hand in hand.

Please pray for Denise as she carries the vision for her clinic and her family. May her patients and children experience the love of Jesus through her excellent care and tender words.
