Small but significant strides in Mexico

Ministry co-director Keila Fernandez conducts and eye exam in April at her ministry site in Eloxochitán, Mexico.

ELOXOCHITLÁN, MEXICO―Small, meager, unnoticed. These are words from which we tend to shy away. Yet, through seemingly insignificant events, differences are made in people’s lives and Christ’s kingdom comes into the world.

Doctors Ádan Diáz and Keila Fernandez minister in the small town of Eloxochitlán in southern Mexico. This is not an easy place to live as they are far off the main roads and don’t have access to many of life’s comforts. Yet, Ádan and Keila feel a calling to bring medical services to the mountainous town which has never had appropriate access to care.

Ádan works long hours as a dentist, which consists of typical dental care, but also dental education. Keila, an optometrist, gives eye exams and fits glasses in the afternoons after homeschooling their two children in the mornings.

Imagine for a moment their sacrifice of salary, professional advancement and many daily comforts to treat people’s medical needs. Imagine seeing patient after patient who have never been to a dentist or optometrist, while seeking ways to share the Gospel message with them. As with many acts of obedience, there must be days when it seems like progress is slow and the sacrifice is great. Days when they must question if their difficult and unnoticed work in a remote corner of the world has significance. Yet, like with most acts of selfless service, as Ádan and Keila care for each patients’ needs, they are incarnating the presence of Christ’s transforming love.

The difference that Ádan and Keila are making might seem small, insignificant or seemingly unnoticed to most of the world, yet they are making a difference in the town of Eloxochitlán and God’s glory is being shown in tangible ways to a community where it is greatly needed. Please pray for Adan and Keila as they work each day to show the love of Jesus to their community.
